8. Tending to his wounds

It's been 15 days since that incident. Meera started ignoring Devansh as much as possible. She started getting up early and went to bed early to ignore Devansh who wakes up late and goes to bed late. She will wake up at 4:30, get ready, and stay in the kitchen till he goes to the office and sleeps before he comes back. It has become their routine for 15 days. Devansh is feeling weird. He was observing everything but could not confront Meera as he didn't have any answer if she asked why he cared.

Though Devansh apologized to Meera the next morning while dressing her wound, and also confessed he didn't mean to hurt her and it happened by mistake. Meera could understand him as her Kaka is someone who can turn the coolest person into a raging bull. Meera told him that the way he behaved was not forgivable, she did forgive him eventually. And she stayed away from him because she didn't want to get her hopes high about their marriage.

Devansh, who noticed everything wanted to confront her but again, what would he say if she asked why does he care? But deep down,  both of them knew he cared. It was something Meera was scared of. He cares for her, and she doesn't want his pity. She knew he felt guilty for pushing her and she didn't want him to come close to her out of guilt.

On the other hand, Devansh is trying to figure out his own feelings. In the past 15 days, he always woke up before her but stayed silent not wanting her to wake up even early, spoiling her sleep. He always made sure to cover her with a quilt before sleeping. He replaced his bitter guard juice with carrot juice as Meera didn't like it. He doesn't want to hurt her but her being Eshwar's niece and his past experiences are not letting him confess openly. Meera noticed everything but remained silent as she thought they both needed some time to accept the reality.

It's a Monday morning when Meera is on a call with her Kaki. She didn't see Devansh sitting on the bed, lost in his thoughts. She talked to her Kaki and went to take a bath, keeping the phone on the dressing table. She came out wearing a red dress wiping her wet hair with a towel. She jerked her hair making water droplets fall on Devansh who was deeply engrossed in his work. It gained his attention and he turned to look at his wife, her waist was in clear view as he was sitting on the bed and she standing near the mirror.

Meera is deep in thought to notice his reflection in the mirror but he is enjoying his wife's beauty through the mirror. Her milky waist is making his thoughts run wild. He tried to avert his eyes but his eyes were not ready to leave the beautiful sight in front of them. Devansh, who never glanced at women after that incident, started getting attracted to his wife. He could feel his heart beating erratically in its cage and goosebumps started to form on seeing her freshly bathed body.

The droplets of water shining on her flawless skin made him take in a sharp breath. He gulped when she bit her lower lip and his hands fisted on his thighs when she moved her hair to the front, leaving her wet, bareback on display to his eyes.

He started to notice every little detail of hers. Her smiles, her frowns, her laughter, her mischief with his brother, her flawless beauty, and her soft yet firm tone while ordering around in the palace, every little thing about her started to attract him and he, let her magnetic force take control over him.

Devansh who never saw any woman with other intentions, could feel his heart race whenever his wife passed beside him, leaving her intoxicating fragrance behind. He could feel goosebumps on his skin, whenever their fingers brushed during their meals, it was all new for him, to feel for someone and to care deeply about their moods but it was happening, and he was letting it happen.

He averted his gaze from Meera's waist to her face, and a small, almost invisible smile formed on his lips as he noticed her pouting at her reflection. Meera was trying to open her new moisturizer but the lid seemed to be more grumpy than her husband.

Devansh got down from the bed and walked to Meera as if he were captivated by some spell. He gently took the bottle from her hands and twisted the lid, opening it in one go making Meera gasp at the audacity of the bottle to get opened by him in one go. She forwarded her hand, asking for the bottle but Devansh was too lost in his wife's beauty to register anything else.

He took a step forward, reducing the distance further. Meera gasped in surprise but kept staring at him, eye-to-eye, matching his intense gaze. The air between them started to get warmer and a little tendril fell on Meera's face testing Devansh's self-control. He raised his hand to tuck the hair back but Meera's phone went off bringing them out of their trance. She pushed Devansh a little and rushed out making him chuckle at her reaction.

"Why is she so innocent and her Kaka such a bastard?" He thought to himself and got ready for his office. As he was buttoning his shirt, his eyes fell on the comb lying on the dressing table, with her hair strands stuck in it. The incidents from morning started to cloud his brain making him lick his lips nervously. He was never interested in women. He never glanced at them nor tried to initiate any physical interaction with any woman.

But his wife seems to be an exception. He couldn't restrict her, maybe he didn't want to. He is not sure about it. But he liked admiring her beauty. He loved the erratic beating of his heart when she was around, he loved the way he got lost in her fragrance, he enjoyed watching her do things, and admiring her secretly had become a habit for him. He went to the Office after getting ready.

His day didn't go well as he got to know about the one who was behind the leakage of designs that day. He asked his men to bring them to his warehouse. His blood boiled looking at the traitor who dared to go against Devansh Singh Rajawat, because of whom he hurt his wife. He reached the man with quick steps and punched him square in the face, multiple times, till the blood started to ooze out of his nose and mouth.

The man's pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears as Devansh could only see Meera's crying face in front of him. He was punching that man not caring about the blood splashing on his white shirt. Devansh's knuckles too got hurt but he didn't care about that. He left the man only when Aneesh pulled him away. He shot the man between his eyes and went out.

Devansh started driving the car like a madman, his thoughts only filled with Meera. He didn't know why she was affecting him so much. He didn't even realize when he reached home and he walked into his chamber without his knowledge. Meera who was deeply engrossed in her book averted her gaze on hearing the sound of the door being opened and shut. She looked at Devansh standing at the door.

Deshivered hair, red eyes, wrinkled shirt with droplets of blood, bleeding knuckles but angry face. He looked scary but all Meera felt was concern for him. He was just standing there lost in his world. Meera ran to him looking at his state.

"Rana ji, what happened?" she asked him but he was not even looking at her as if he was in some trance. She touched his arm to get his attention and it broke his trance. He looked at Meera and then roamed his eyes around the room, confused, as if it was his first time seeing that room. He walked to the bed and sat there without answering Meera. He didn't even realize that she spoke to him after 15 days.

Meera walked into the closet and came back with a first-aid kit. She sat on her knees in front of him and took his hand in hers. He looked at her but she averted her gaze towards his wounded hand. She cleaned it and applied ointment before tying the bandage. She could feel his intense gaze on her all the while but decided to ignore it. Once she was done with her work she stood up to leave but he held her wrist stopping her. She turned around and asked what does he want with her eyes.

"Why are you treating my wounds when we don't even talk with each other?" He asked getting up and standing in front of her.

"You treated my wounds when you hated my family. I don't even hate you or your family. So why can't I?" She said and walked out leaving him in his thoughts.

"She is nothing like her Kaka. Am I doing wrong by hurting her?" He thought seeing her retreating figure. She is surely affecting him but he doesn't want her to affect him. At the same time, he is not happy with her being distant. He wants to keep her close but the fear of getting his heart broken is not letting him take a step towards their togetherness and Meera being related to her sworn enemy is not helping his situation.

Meera went to the closet, placed the first aid kit in its place, and went to the bathroom to wash her hands. It was already night time and looking at the sleeping figure of Devansh she asked the maids to bring their dinner to their room. After a few minutes, a maid placed their dinner in their room and left.

Meera sat on the couch debating with herself whether to wake him up or not. After what felt like an eternity she decided to wake him up and went to him. She called him twice but he didn't wake up. She poked his arm to wake him up but he didn't budge. She tried patting him but no response.

"I thought he was Ravan. But, he is sleeping here like kumbakarn!" she muttered to herself. She got an idea and giggled.

Meera don't! We don't want to get into trouble! Her subconscious tried to warn her but Meera being Meera didn't listen to it and walked to him with a water jug. She was about to pour water on him but he opened his eyes making her go still.

"What are you doing?" He asked rubbing his eyes and sitting straight.

"Woh... I... I, the weather is too hot!" She blurted out whatever came into her mind. She was looking like a deer caught in the light. Devansh understood her intentions and wanted to laugh at her scared face.

"So?" He asked trying hard to control his laugh which was trying to break out.

"So, I am pouring water on me to cool down." She said and emptied the jug on herself. Devansh broke out into fits of laughter looking at her face. Meera couldn't believe her eyes for a minute. She's used to seeing him all serious and grumpy, always with that furrowed brow or maybe just a bit too quiet. But then, out of the blue, something makes him laugh. She made him laugh. Not just a small chuckle, but a full-on, genuine laugh that lights up his face.

His eyes crinkled at the end and the dimples popped out as he laughed out loud clutching his stomach as Meera looked funny with water dripping from her hair. Her heart skips a beat, and she's completely mesmerized. It's like she's seeing a new side of him, one that's soft, warm, and oh-so-adorable. She can't help but smile, feeling a wave of warmth and genuine happiness just wash over her. There's this mix of joy and relief like she's unlocked a little secret part of him.

It was such a beautiful, tender moment. In that laugh, she could see an entirely different Devansh - the way his tough exterior faded, revealing his bright laugh, akin to a bright sun after a downpour, his laugh was just like a kid's pure and full of life.

Devansh sobered up after a while and cleared his throat while Meera too looked away not meeting his eyes. None of them spoke a word after that. She gave him his plate but he placed it aside and asked her to change her clothes and dry herself. She tried to argue but a glare from him made her realize it was meaningless. So, she dragged herself to the closet, changed her clothes, and dried her hair quickly.

Devansh was waiting for her and they both sat to eat once she came back. On seeing his difficulty in eating she took the plate from him and started feeding him. He too ate in silence feeling content.

This time, instead of covering her with a blanket, like he does every day, Devansh slept beside her on the floor. He wanted to carry her to the bed but he didn't want to touch her without her consent so he decided to share her hardship, which he himself imposed on her.

After that day, Meera stopped hiding from him and he too tried to see Meera as his wife instead of Eshwar's daughter. He also tried to assure himself that Meera was nothing like others and she wouldn't throw him into darkness again. He continued to sleep on the ground, beside his wife but Meera was unaware of this as he used to wake up before her and moved to bed, acting as if he was actually sleeping on the bed the whole night.
